Why it rocks:
Parkland Pillar® Birch is an exciting new addition to the First Editions® tree collection, making it a distinctive choice for homeowners. This extremely cold-hardy tree is a newer variety of the Dakota Pinnacle® Birch. Selected by Parkland Nurseries in Alberta, Canada, it was later introduced by Jefferies Nursery of Winnipeg. Parkland® Pillar Birch boasts excellent cold and drought tolerance, along with a striking upright, columnar shape. This elegant and slender tree is perfect for tight spaces, serving as a vertical accent and providing privacy and screening.
In spring, chartreuse catkins dangle from its branches, attracting birds and other important early spring pollinators. In the summer, dark green leaves with finely serrated edges densely cover its tightly branched canopy. You will enjoy the privacy this tree has to offer! Kick back and relax as you listen to the gentle fluttering of its leaves in the breeze. In autumn, the leaves transform into a glowing shade of yellow-gold. When young, the bark has a brownish hue, and eventually changes to a unique chalky white color. As it matures, the white, peeling bark becomes an ornamental feature that stands out in all seasons. Enhance your landscape with the dramatic yet graceful presence of Parkland Pillar® Birch!
Where to put it:
Parkland Pillar® Birch is a striking addition to any landscape and a popular choice for privacy and seasonal color. This attractive and reliable tree is versatile! It can be planted as an accent in front or backyards, in parkways and boulevards, or grouped in groves. Due to its columnar form, it is particularly effective for providing privacy and screening. When planting in multiples, it is best to group them in odd numbers for a more naturalized look. With its tightly-branched canopy that grows upright rather than outward, this tree is ideal for smaller yards and residential parkways, ensuring a safe passage for pedestrians. As an accent, it serves as a striking and elegant centerpiece in your landscape. Additionally, Parkland Pillar® Birch is well-suited for challenging urban environments, offering shade, beauty, and privacy. Its vibrant seasonal colors and sturdy, narrow form contribute to its appeal. To promote optimal growth, plant your new tree at least 4 feet away from any nearby structures.
What it needs:
Parkland Pillar® Birch prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. This durable tree tolerates various site conditions, including those with alkaline soils. It is known for being heat and drought-resistant, while also being extremely cold-hardy; because of this, Parkland Pillar® Birch is a top choice for urban landscapes. It will enhance your landscape while demonstrating strong resistance to Japanese Beetles. To promote a strong & healthy root system, please adhere to our tree care guidelines during the initial growing seasons.
