Why it rocks:
Dawn Redwood is an ancient and interesting deciduous conifer with a very delicate, ferny appearance, and a very tall, pyramidal habit of growth. The shaggy, reddish bark is appealing and its rusty orange fall color makes this a spectacular specimen tree. Dawn Redwood is the hardiest of the redwood/sequoia family and is extremely fast growing. Because it is a deciduous evergreen it allows winter sun to penetrate which makes it a truly unique specimen tree. For this tree’s statistics please click on the Additional Details tab above.
Where to put it:
Because of its low branching, it is best to plant Dawn Redwood where you would normally plant an evergreen tree. Avoid the parkway unless trimmed up, and look to open areas of the front or back yard, or along property lines. This tree should be planted at least 15 ft away from buildings.
