Why it rocks:

Skyline Honeylocust is one of the most unique additions that you can make to your home landscape. One of our highest recommended trees, Skyline Honeylocust provides qualities that no other shade trees possess. Their fern-like foliage adds a unique texture to the landscape while offering a dappled shade underneath. In the fall their feathery foliage turns an outstanding yellow, and will require no raking because of their small leaf size. Their rapid growth rate and extreme toughness make this tree a sure bet. For this tree’s statistics please click on the Additional Details tab above.

Questions on Skyline Honeylocust

  • From Megan Mann at 4/5/14 7:09 AM
    • Is this a Thornless tree, botanical name Gleditsia triacanthos inermis 'Skyline' ?

Also, if we buy trees, how long can we wait until we have them delivered and planted?
    • Thanks for the question Megan. Yes, the Skyline Honeylocust is thornless- in fact, inermis means thornless in latin. We will start delivering and installing trees in May- based on the weather this year and the amount of orders we already have in, I would say mid-May.

    • Skyline Honeylocust 1. How does this tree propagate? seed pods, runners, or what? 2. Do the branches hang low making it difficult to walk under and unsuitable for a walkway or parkway planting? 3. is the root system on the surface or deep growing?
    • Bobbi,

The Skyline Honeylocust is a seedless/podless variety- so it will not propagate. The branches do not hang down, and can be easily trimmed up to suit your needs- from the nursery shade trees are pruned up to about 5.5-6ft above ground. As the tree grows, many people will prune them up to about 7 or 8 ft above ground. We do recommend waiting several years until the tree is re-established before pruning them up- as the lower branches tend to be the large ones and provide the tree a lot of leaf area for growth. They are definitely suitable for a walkway or parkway planting- and are very commonly used as such- they are fast growing and tough. The root systems of almost all trees is typically in about the top 2 feet of soil- and I would consider honeylocust to have a pretty deep growing root system. They are very commonly used in parking lots, sidewalk cutouts, and parkways- so the root system is typically not a nuisance in these situations. Sorry for the delay in responding, our product questions system is new, and were still figuring it out!
