Nope, we’re not talking about your little sister who reveres her title as the family’s “over-achiever” and can, on occasion, be quite the “crabby-appleton.”
Actually, since iTrees.com is in the business of those tall, leafy, green things, of course I am talking about the splendid Crabapple Tree! This common ornamental tree explodes with pretty pink blossoms in the spring, and pops with red, tart mini-apples in the fall. Tree height ranges from 6’ to 50’ (whoa!), but most varieties fall within the 15’ to 25’ area.
Crabapples are a low-maintenance tree, rarely requiring fertilizing and watering (unless in the case of a drought). The trees are perhaps the most cherished flowering trees in the Midwest. Unlike other spring-bloomers, the crabapple has no problem with heavy soil and chilly winters.
Though the Crabapple Tree’s fruit isn’t immediately thought of when baking, it is yummy treat during the fall season in apple butters, ciders and jellies.
A Crabapple Tree (offered at a special price right now!) from iTrees.com is a beautiful addition to your Chicago landscaping projects during any season. (A wide selection of Crabapple Trees can be found in the Ornamental Trees section of our site.)
