When iTrees.com delivers a tree to your home, our care and expertise ensures that your beautiful investment is properly placed and planted. But, with colder months looming, fall is the perfect time to easily and quickly prep your investments for the snow and ice.
Fall Care for your iTrees.com tree:
1. Find your rake. And start raking. – This is a must. Clear leaves after they fall to make sure your tree continues to get enough water and light. Untended leaves also provide a home for pesky bugs that want to harm your tree; don’t let those bugs live in your yard!
2. Water. Maybe. And mulch. – Most trees don’t need watering, but sometimes they do. If your tree is looking brown and thirsty, give it a drink. If a thirsty tree is a repeated problem, or you’d like your tree to have an extra blanket of protection from the freezing temperatures, an application of mulch around the base will help to retain water in the soil. Don’t get “mulch-happy,” though. A three or four-inch layer is enough; too much mulch near the trunk of your tree leads to bark decay and more bug issues.
3. Fertilize, if necessary. – Winter winds are rough on trees, too. Though most trees don’t absolutely need fertilizer, fruiting and flowering trees might.
4. Have a young tree? Wrap it up. – Stop ice and snow or hungry animals from harming your investment. By wrapping the base of trees in a hard plastic or metal hardware cloth, your tree is fittingly protected from the wintery elements and visitors. When Spring rolls around (hopefully very quickly!) remove the wraps so that the tree can successfully keep growing.
