Common Witchhazel is a small, native tree featuring fragrant yellow flowers appearing late in the season, from October to December depending on the weather. The crooked, spreading branch make this small tree architecturally beautiful. The golden yellow fall color can be quite spectacular, and coupled with the interesting architecture and late flowers this tree is really a great native plant. Where to put it:
Common Witchhazel is native to much of the Eastern and Midwestern United States making it very valuable for a naturalized situation. While it gets much larger than the Vernal Witchhazel this tree is commonly used in shrub borders, hedges, or in groupings around buildings. Witchhazel can be grown in open areas as well, and the gorgeous yellow fall color can only be beat by the wonderful fragrance with permeates the cool autumn air. What it needs:
Common Witchhazel will grow nearly anywhere from open areas to groupings. This tree will tolerate full sun or shade, is tolerant of urban conditions, and prefers a moist soil- it is best to avoid extremely dry situations. For tree care instructions please click here.
